Angkor Wat

I'm posting an old tune ('98) from Underground Resistance affiliate DJ Dex. This track, like most UR productions, has aged rather well:
DJ Dex "Angkor Wat"

Found this interview with 'Mad' Mike Banks on the internets. HUD samples this on Part 2 of the PLEASE HANG UP mix series. So many great sentences in there. "High-tech this inner-city mindset" is an all-time favorite. With German subtitles!

Please Hang Up

Just finished listening to a new mix from HANG UP DJ. What can I say? Classics alongside some '09 pressure. Styles range from dub-laden, techno influenced steppers, to tracks some might call 'funky', and sounds in between. It's all held together by vintage telephone recordings and some great mixing. High quality 320 kbps. 64 minutes.

Words from HUD:
"Made this at my spot in Hackney (London). As James Stinson once said of music , 'It's nothing to talk about'. Started this mix without any destination in mind. Just picked tracks I felt like hearing today. Mixing is a little fast and rugged, but I like it like that. New jacks, relax. It's love, you know the steez. Just a DJ beating some records. Timeless. Look out for part two. Enjoy."

Joker

DL: JOKER is producer from Bristol. Had a massive tune with "Snake Eater". I'm not sure if the title is a video game reference on the sly, or an unknowing nod to espionage in a bygone era of gully spies (dude has a screenshot from TRON on his myspace, realness). Huge tune. Wait til' HOT 97 gets hold of this one. Seen what this tune can do on on a proper system, in the dance. Snake Eater should be bought swiftly here or here.

But I'm feeling the b-side selection, another tune I'd love to hear while out in London (hint - this one sounds live on vinyl bluud).

Grimey for the win:
JOKER - "Grimey Princes":

DL: HERE.
Joker and Nomad are doing it with Mumdance and Jammer on Saturday (Cargo, London):
----
More not-really lists and a mixtape on the way. Technology issues to resolve first.

not really a list pt. 1

We at Bodymusik would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to George Bush for accomplishing NONE of the dubious items on his list (although a US invasion of Canada would be grand).

Alas, we also missed the "best of 2008" list deadline (by several weeks). We were in Brooklyn messing around and blogging was the farthest thing from our minds. Well, hopefully the quality here makes up for being unfashionably late (where do you blog heads find the time?). So, with no rhyme no reason (i.e. no order), straight from East London, here's part 1 of our year's highlights from the bodymusik camp.

1.
We start with a release from this year (ha switched it up on you, list maker crazies), from another Bristol Wunderkind (I see you Joker) via Germany.
SCLIST has put out one of the first 'dubstep' records of the year that deserves some chatter. You can hear the Berlin, Basic Channel, dub-tech influence through and through. I'm putting up the title track (although the Phaeleh remix is also on-point) :

SCLIST - "Darkroom":
***removed by artist's request***

2.

Offshore records put out this little flip featuring a Starkey remix of a big tune called "Lilyliver", originally by Darkstar (on 2010 records). While I'm a fan of the original version, the Starkey remix has some layers that the original lacks. In the tradition of Pinch , this vocal track keeps it moving:

Darkstar - "Lilyliver" (Starkey remix):

3.
One would have to be whacked not to include Mr. Steven Ellison (aka Flying Lotus) and his album "Los Angeles" in their '08 lists. We're going with a remix of the song "Camel" by Nosaj Thing.

Flying Lotus - "Camel" (Nosaj Thing remix):

4.
Does anyone answer unknown numbers, ever? When I see the "Private Caller" flash on my phone, I'm singing out this tune from Busy Signal, then it's going to voicemail.

Busy Signal - "Unknown Number":

5.
Matt Shadetek, Jace Clayton (DJ / Rupture), and crew have a label called Dutty Artz that puts out what they describe as "New York Tropical", and it's proper. It's tough for me to choose a track from this label, as I'm partial to quite a few ("Can't Breathe" remix anyone?). Since I played "Go Round Payola" to DEATH, here's a remix of Iron Shirt, "I Gave you all my Love", Shadetek on production featuring Jahdan Blakkamoore. Oh, and buy Rupture's fully sanctioned (serious) mix "Uproot", he deserves your G-backs, your P's, and most definitely your €'s. You can get it from Amazon as well for like $9 or something ridiculous.

Iron Shirt - "I Gave You All My Love" (Matt Shadetek remix):

hyperdub

Recent track I like from Zomby called "1 UP":

DL: HERE

Also, on the off-kilter UK bass music tip, I'm excited for the new Joker record, "Digidesign" (or is it called "Purple Funk"?). I hope Hyperdub provides the usual quality control, and that it's as fresh sounding as what I've heard so far. And Joker, when is "Do It" coming to vinyl?

comedy

I couldn't resist this one. Though Bodymusik tries to maintain a modicum of seriousness, this is just too perfect to pass up:

If you ride the bus in East London (with all the youngers blastin T-Pain spin-offs out of their phones etc.), you might appreciate this one. OG to the third degree.

And yes, he said "butternut reduction". If you don't know, you better get to know.

three select

The Bodymusik page has been more or less dead this year ( crazy long hours doing sound work for the British TV/Film industry). So, I thought I better get back here and start posting some musik.

If the 3 tracks below seem a bit random, they are. Enjoy them just the same. Hi-res business only.

Like Mingus, Ahmed Abdul-Malik rates as one of the great bassists in jazz. Born in Brooklyn of Sudanese parents, he was also a master oud player, and helped bring North African and Middle-Eastern texture into jazz with beautiful results. "Jazz Sound of Africa" is easily among my favorite records.
DL: Ahmed Abdul-Malik "La Ibkey"

BUY IT: HERE

Sutekh, named after the Egyptian god of storms and chaos, can be a bit hit and miss. But no one can say Seth Horvitz isn't prolific. He's releaseed stuff on (ridiculously) diverse labels, from Soul Jazz to Mille Plateaux. See him flip it live, his grinding Detroit inspired techno sets are lovely. This is a more subdued remix by O. Lamm, of some older material.
DL: Sutekh "Bed Of The Cylinder (O. Lamm remix)"

BUY IT: HERE

Chancha Via Circuito is Argentinian producer Pedro Canale, who has been all over the place lately with his cumbia-laced productions, appearing on the latest release from the DJ Rupture / Matt Shadetek label Dutty Artz. This one is from a disc called "Rodante" on the ZZK label.
DL: Chancha Via Circuito "Pachamama (ft. Poeta Inka)"

Happy New Year to all the Bodymusik visitors. Thanks for the emails and nice words on the Table Tennis mix. Travels, and a new job in post-production have been keeping me away from the blog, but expect an audio-heavy update soon. Hold tight spare time. Look for Bodymusik DJs playing around London in February on heavy rotation. Bless.

nuffing new

Been a slow month music-wise...so I'm posting stuff that's filling the gap in the meantime. Feels like it's been raining in London for months now. So, with no rhyme ,no reason, a few tunes to download from BodyMusik. Some classic Detroit material, some Caribbean heat, and a couple of throw-backs. All decent quality (as far as Mp3's go):

Thanks to Blackdown for this radio rip:
Busy Signal & Mavado "oh no (jail)" & "amazing grace (excerpt)"

This mixed-tempo, proto-dubstep chune seems to have aged alright:
Hyper on the Experience "Half-Stepper"

Aging well is never a trick for classic Purpose Maker material. Hold tight Detroit!
Purpose Maker "The Dancer"

The Villalobos ode to pineapple (and perhaps Germany): Ricardo Villlabos "Ananas"

And back full circle to another massive Busy Signal tune. Vocoder soul:
Busy Signal "These are the Days (very dirty version)"

PS- The "ParLaya" mix (pt. 1) is still good to go...cop with swiftness down below.

Damn. The one and only Andrew Hill is gone now. Andrew, we hardly knew ya. One could throw around words like contemplative or meditational to describe his playing, but I'm sure someone's said it better. Andrew himself said "involution". schools of old

All this dubious talk about "new rave" and the like (hey, it's not even close), how 'bout something a little more seasoned? Here's a set from Redhandz circa 2000-2001, and most the tracks on here are older than that by quite a bit. Clocks in at over 50 minutes. Something futuristic even now about this strain of, dare I say it, techno music. See what you think.
